Acquiring a Bacterial Sample

Below are general instructions for acquiring a bacterial sample. Please follow these instructions only if you have not been given specific instructions for acquiring the sample from one of the NOVOMED Physicians or the Patient Coordinator.

Please be sure to send payment for your lab test at the same time you ship the sample. The lab will not begin testing without prior receipt of payment.

Instructions for Patients with Urinary Tract Infections

Send at least a 10 ml urine sample in a sterile, water-tight container. The urine sample should be collected in the morning and should be taken "mid flow". It is important that the sample be sent as quickly as possible via FedEx, UPS, DHL or one of the other express shippers.

Unless you are instructed otherwise by your physician, you should refrain from taking antibiotics a minimum of five days prior to acquiring the urine sample.

Label the container as described below.

Instructions for Patients with Prostatitis

Send at least a 10 ml sample of urine in a sterile, water-tight container. Immediately prior to taking the sample, your urologist should perform a prostate massage. The prostate massage will cause the prostate fluid and any pathogens to be forced into the bladder.

Instructions for Patients Who are Sending a Stool Sample

The sample should be shipped in a small, sterile, water-tight container. The sample should be packed in ice or dry ice; it is OK to freeze the sample in order to help extend usability. Stool is viable for only a short period of time, therefore it is important that the sample be sent as quickly as possible via FedEx, UPS, DHL or one of the other express shippers.

Unless you are instructed otherwise by your physician, you should refrain from taking antibiotics a minimum of five days prior to acquiring the stool sample.

Label the container as described below.

Instructions For Patients with Other Types of Infection

Ship the bacterial sample(s) in semi-solid medium via an express shipper to the NOVOMED Integrative Medicine Center lab (click the "Shipping Bacterial Sample" link in the menu to the left on the screen for shipping instructions). Kits such as the StarSwabII® are excellent for this purpose.

Label the container as described below.

Bacterial Sample Container Labeling Instructions
