Chronic and Difficult to Treat Infections

A chronic condition is a human health condition or disease that is persistent or otherwise long-lasting in its effects. The term chronic is usually applied when the course of the disease lasts for more than three months.

The Role of Biofilms in Chronic Infections

Bacteria that attach to surfaces join together to form in a polymeric matrix are referred to as biofilms. Formation of these communities of bacteria are inherently resistant to antimicrobial agents and are at the root of many persistent and chronic bacterial infections.

This 11 minute film is excerpted from an interview with Dr. Tim Lu, who is an expert in characterizing & eliminating biofilms with phage therapy. He offers some insightful ways to describe complex biofilms and their connection to antibiotic resistance.
